LOUISVILLE, Tenn. -- Larry Shofe, the renowned swimming coach who once led programs at Riverview High School and the Sarasota Family YMCA, was found dead Monday in Tennessee.
Shofe's death is being investigated as a suicide.
Shofe, 55, left Sarasota to take over the Pilot Aquatic Club in Knoxville, Tenn., earlier this month. A Tennessee newspaper, the Knoxville News Sentinel, reported today that Shofe was found in his Corvette, with a hose running from the tailpipe to the window.
Shofe won a lucrative contract with the Pilot Aquatic Club after working for four years in Sarasota. He took Riverview to consecutive state championships and coached six YMCA Sharks club swimmers to this year's Olympic Trials.

Coach Shofe will be sorely missed by those who recognized his passion for what was truly his calling...a dedication to our children on the Sarasota Ymca Sharks Swim Team. I am happy to say I took the opportunity to tell him that while he was still with us. I am saddened by this tragic event and offer my deepest condolences to all who love him.
