93,000 without power statewide, FPL reports

About 93,000 customers of Florida Power & Light were without power in the wake of Tropical Storm Fay as of late morning.
The Juno Beach-based company, the primary power supplier in Manatee, Sarasota and Charlotte counties, said that it has 4,300 personnel — its own and out-of-state workers — in the field working to restore electricity.
The number of outages is expected to fluctuate throughout the day, but FPL said damage to infrastructure — unlike during the strikes of hurricanes Charley in 2004 and Wilma in 2005 — has been minimal.
Most of the outages are in some of the counties in this region where Fay made landfall and in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties.
Customers are asked to report power outages using FPL’s FPL’s automated system at 1-800-4-OUTAGE. They can use their FPL account number or their phone number to report their outage. Customers with Internet access can also report their outage at www.FPL.com.
