BRADENTON – The mother of a 1-year-old girl was arrested Monday evening on a charge of child neglect after the infant was found wandering the street while the mother picked up another child at school.

Martha P. Navis-Torres, 33, of the 1600 block of 51st Avenue East, told deputies her daughter was sleeping when she left for about 15 minutes to pick her son up from school around 3:30 p.m. Monday, the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office said.

A witness said the infant came out of the trailer park and stood in the middle of 51st Avenue East near 15th Street East. Cars were swerving around the girl and honking their horns, according to a report. The witness took the child in and called 911. The girl was not injured.

Your baby is taking a nap, and you have to go pick up your other child from school, so, you leave the baby alone? The worse part of this story is how vehicles were swerving to avoid hitting this baby in the road.. and honking at him no less. Why didn't someone stop their car and get out to get the baby to safety?????

    (shaking head)

OMG... I can't imagine leaving a sleeping baby home alone to run and get your child from school. That's rediculus!!the mother SHOULD face charges... and like Sunny said, why didn't someone and try to pick up this child before she was pickd up????? This mother was old enough to know better... sad.. just sad!!!

I do not know about anyone else... but, if I saw a baby walking down the street by themselves, I would have run out after it right then.. not just sit there and look at it! I wonder how many cars drove around the baby honking???

This woman should have both children taken away from her for a good while, till she takes class & have her driver's lis., taken away for good.
All this after she is put into jail ,then treatment, then only visitation for along while. No reason to leave any kid home alone.

I know I would stop and help that child. However in this day & age with my luck I would be accused of trying to kidnap the child. I would keep the child safe and secure and call authorities. I would NOT place that child in my vehicle and take them to authorites, no way. Unfortunately, society has made us believe that everyone is the boogie man ... including a helpless child. Not long ago if someone offered you a lift - it was insulting to NOT take them up on their offer. When exactly did all that change?

I'm curious, how did the baby get out of the house? I don't remember my kids being able to turn a door handle and open at that age!?!? Walk and run - absolutely. Good thing the baby is safe.

My thanks go out to the witness who stopped, picked up the one year old girl and called 911.
I predict the mother receives probation and mandatory counseling.

TW - I never thought of the door! That is interesting...

You are right.. I guess the best thing to do, would be to pull off, get the baby out of the street and call 911... but, stay out of the vehicle, and stay as close to the area that you first found the baby.

? ? ? If so, then the 16 year old was left in charge of the baby.. and the mother did not leave the baby alone..

how did the baby get outside? Do people generally leave the doors open? I know it is not hot out today.. maybe the door was open for the fresh air we have blowing around.
