HOCKEY: Lightning swap pair with Vancouver

VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- The Vancouver Canucks traded defenseman Lukas Krajicek and minor-league forward Juraj Simek to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Monday for defenseman Shane O'Brien and right wing Michel Ouellet.

Ouellet has 54 goals in 187 NHL games with Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay.

O'Brien has 37 points and 330 penalty minutes in 158 NHL games.

Krajicek missed most of last season with a shoulder injury that required surgery.

Simek was the Canucks' sixth-round pick in 2006, and has yet to play an NHL game.

Carolina Hurricanes forward Scott Walker is expected to be sidelined for six weeks after surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left hand. The surgery comes four days before the Hurricanes open the regular season against Florida. ... Maple Leafs left wing Ryan Hollweg received an automatic two-game suspension Monday after collecting his third boarding or checking from behind major in a 41-game span. The third penalty came in last Wednesday's 7-3 preseason loss at St. Louis, when Hollweg was assessed a boarding major and game misconduct.

NBA: Curry returns to Knicks' practice

GREENBURGH, N.Y. -- New York Knicks center Eddy Curry practiced for the first time this season Monday after he was sidelined last week because of a bacterial infection.

Curry missed the Knicks' entire training camp in Saratoga Springs, leaving his hotel room only for visits to Saratoga Hospital. That cost him valuable time as he tries to grasp new coach Mike D'Antoni's system.

TENNIS: Nishikori overcomes woes to advance

STOCKHOLM, Sweden -- Wild-card Kei Nishikori ousted Marcel Granollers in the first round of the Stockholm Open on Monday, overcoming a sore knee and a cold for a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory over the eighth-seeded Spaniard.

The Japanese teen will next play Dominik Hrbaty of Slovakia.

The 18-year-old Nishikori, who trains at the IMG Academies in Bradenton, was bothered by his right knee in the first set and requested treatment from a trainer early in the second.

Amelie Mauresmo rallied to beat Alize Cornet 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-4 in the first round of the Kremlin Cup in Moscow. The former top-ranked Frenchwoman will play second-seeded Dinara Safina of Russia in the next round of the dual WTA and ATP tournament. Safina won her fourth title this season in Tokyo on Sept. 21 and is at a career-high No. 3 in the world rankings. ... Juan Carlos Ferrero, once ranked No. 1 but now No. 44, beat fourth-seeded Ivo Karlovic of Croatia 6-4, 7-6 (4) in the opening round of the BA Tennis Trophy in Vienna.

BOXING: Title belt snatched

BERLIN -- Samuel Peter ripped the WBC belt from Vitali Klitschko's hands and stormed off the stage Monday at a news conference to promote their heavyweight title fight.

The two fighters -- both called champions by the WBC -- were engaged in the routine pre-fight stare-down with both holding the belt. Peter, urged by trainer Stacy McKinley, then snatched it from Klitschko's grasp. Klitschko looked surprised, then bemused.

ELSEWHERE: Ballesteros faints, hospitalized

Seve Ballesteros was admitted to a hospital in Spain on Monday after feeling dizzy and fainting. Ballesteros, the winner of three British Opens and two Masters, was taken to La Paz hospital after briefly losing consciousness, the hospital said in a statement. His condition was stable, and he was undergoing diagnostic tests. ... Denny Hamlin was released from a Birmingham hospital Monday, a day after a tire failure led to a hard crash at Talladega Superspeedway.
