The ending of the blog
This will be the last posting on the "Chew On This" blog. I said my goodbyes, am looking for a job and would like to remind everyone to check out my new space here which right now is still local.
Please continue to adopt from shelters and rescues, check out every one in your area and make sure you find the right companion animal for you and your family. There are obedience classes, agility classes, flyball classes and numerous other fun things to do with a dog.
Cats still are in abundance at all the local spots and they all need homes, so don't forget the frisky felines.
It's been fun and I have loved every comment and email I have received. I will see you on the flip side.

Special Labrador for adoption
SandySandy here - don't I just look like Sandy from Grease - a beautiful blond! I'm a very happy, very young senior girl - I just love to be with you and be petted but I still have plenty of spunk.
I currently live with dogs and teens. You should see me at meet and greets - I'm a
fabulous ambassador for Lab Rescue - I'm the original Ms. Meet & Greet without the crown.
I do have some allergies but get allergy shots every three weeks and that pretty much takes care of them. I have been in rescue for awhile...I love my foster family but really would like a permanent family of my own. If you think that an older women is for you here I am....blond and young at heart.
If you are interested in meeting Sandy or adopting one of our other
labs please contact Labrador Retriever Rescue of Florida by by visiting us here. You can also call 1-866-464-LABS.

Senior adoption day on the 13th at the HSSC
SaraFrom Kerry Koppin, Adoption Manager at the Humane Society of Sarasota County:
"We have been so fortunate over the past year to have two of our dogs featured each week on Chew on This. We all know that senior dogs and cats are a passion of Jean’s. Our shelter has created two Saturdays a year to hold adoption events featuring our wonderful senior dogs and cats. The next one is Saturday, September 13.
Some shelters and rescues look at senior cats to be 10 years and older. Our shelter feels that there should be equal treatment for all animals 7 years and older. Our shelter currently has 9 dogs and 23, 7 years and older looking for new homes.
Gordon was adopted from our shelter as a puppy 11 years ago. His owner adopted Ladybug from us in March of 2007 because he wanted to give a senior dog a home. He never suspected that the change in today’s economy would make him have to bring both dogs back to us. With tears in his eyes, he knew he couldn’t afford to care for them and he didn’t want them to suffer so he brought them back to us and asked us to help them find new homes. We would love to see them stay together but we know that might not happen for Gordon and Ladybug.
My husband and I adopted a wonderful senior cat named Sara last fall. She was 15 years old when we brought her home. She had been through two bad bouts of upper respitory for the about six weeks. She was doing well and she had put back the pounds she had lost during her illness.
On Saturday Sara came home with us. She fit right in with our other animals and slept on the pillow above my husband’s head the first night. On Thursday, things started to change for her. Her kidneys were failing. One week from the day we brought Sara home we made the decision that her time had come. We held her as she went to sleep and kissed her good bye.
This wonderful sweet senior touched our hearts like we had never been touched before. She gave us so much in that one week but we know that we gave her something back in return. Sara spent her last week living with a family. Sleeping on a pillow. Sitting in the window with the sun shining in on her while she gave herself a bath. She got to be cuddled, petted, and loved for just being Sara.
Please consider opening up your homes and your hearts to a senior animal. They are really only looking for just one thing: someone to love them for being themselves.
For information on this adoption event, please call Kerry or one of the other adoption counselors at 955-4131. Drop by and have a cup of coffee or a soft drink and visit with the seniors who are looking for a nice place to retire in. -

Suncoast Humane Society is ending its contract with Sarasota County
According to a press release I received today, Suncoast Humane Society will be ending its animal control sheltering contract with Sarasota County on Sept. 1.
What this means is that the county will now be responsible for all stray animals in Sarasota County because they will not be housed in any other facility.
From the press release: "The contract called for Suncoast Humane Society to shelter lost and stray animals found in the southern portion of Sarasota County, including Venice, North Port and the northern portion of Englewood.
These lost and stray animals will now be taken to the Sarasota County Animal Services on Bee Ridge Road in Sarasota. They will no longer be brought to Suncoast Humane Society. Citizens in these areas finding lost or straying animals will continue to phone Sarasota Animal Services at (941) 861-9500 to have them picked up. Residents of North Port will call (941) 426-3111.
Operating an “Open Admissions” Shelter, Suncoast Humane Society will continue to accept all animals brought in and released by the public. Phil Snyder, Executive Director, states, “The decision to end the animal control contract will benefit us in many ways. It will provide space at the shelter for animals in need of longer term care. It also will allow us to create more aggressive spay/neuter and pet adoption programs which brings us more in line with our mission of reducing the number of homeless animals and improving the quality of human and animal life." The society also expects this change to help lower euthanasia rates at the shelter."
Although I understand the reasoning behind doing this and am sure the result will be lower euthanasia rates at Suncoast, expect the county, which is already in a budget crunch, to be strapped to find a way to pick up the animals and then actually get them adopted. The county's euthanasia rates will skyrocket so more animals will die and our taxes are paying for it.
What a tragedy we aren't more responsible. We pay one way or another. -

CallieHi! My name is Callie and I am a very beautiful 5-year-old girl.
Like a sports car, I can go from zero to 60 and 60 to zero in no time whatsoever. I love to sit by your feet and have my ears scratched. But if you pick up a ball and throw it, I will retrieve it all day long. I love to play!
When playtime is done, I will lie down again and be happy to be near you. I am very ladylike when walking on the leash and get along well with other dogs. I have a great time playing with my foster brother and am great about sharing toys.
If you are interested in meeting Callie or adopting one of the other Labs, please contact Labrador Retriever Rescue of Florida by clicking here. You can also call (866) 464-LABS.
